Toda a modula\u00e7\u00e3o e desmodula\u00e7\u00e3o do sinal s\u00e3o efectuadas no modem. Um computador dom\u00e9stico \u00e9 ligado \u00e0 Internet utilizando o modem, porque este actua como uma ponte entre o computador dom\u00e9stico e a Internet. Os dispositivos de modem s\u00e3o utilizados na liga\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e0 Internet porque tratam de todos os tipos de sinais. O computador e a Internet funcionam com sinais diferentes. O fornecedor de servi\u00e7os Internet envia um sinal anal\u00f3gico do seu lado, mas o computador s\u00f3 entende o sinal digital. Para esse efeito, \u00e9 utilizado um modem na liga\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e0 Internet, porque converte o sinal anal\u00f3gico num sinal digital, de modo a que o computador dom\u00e9stico compreenda facilmente o sinal e a Internet funcione no computador dom\u00e9stico. Os dispositivos de modem modulam o sinal anal\u00f3gico para digital proveniente da Internet e, em seguida, enviam-no para o computador.
